L-Carnitine
This ingredient is only present in TCfeline Special Formula
L-Carnitine is a vitamin-like amino acid compound that the body synthesises from the essential amino acids lysine and methionine. This synthesis primarily takes place in the liver and kidneys. Once produced, L-carnitine is transported to tissues that rely heavily on fat for energy—particularly the heart and skeletal muscles.
Its primary role is to shuttle long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria—the “powerhouses” of the cell—where these fats are burned for fuel in a process called beta-oxidation. This function is critical for energy production, especially in muscle tissue. In addition, L-carnitine contributes to metabolic regulation, acts as an antioxidant, and may help maintain muscle protein balance.
Because its synthesis depends partly on healthy kidney function, cats with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) often don’t produce enough L-carnitine. A deficiency can lead to impaired fat metabolism, reduced energy production, and muscle wasting—which can affect both skeletal muscles and the heart. Supplementing L-carnitine can support these cats by helping them use dietary fat and body fat stores more effectively, improving energy metabolism, and protecting muscle mass.
L-carnitine supplementation has also shown protective effects against ketosis and hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease), especially during periods of involuntary fasting. This is particularly relevant in CKD cats, who often lose their appetite due to nausea. Cats are susceptible to problems with fat metabolism during fasting, as they are obligate carnivores and rely on dietary protein for energy and are not well equipped to mobilize body fat stores. This makes them especially vulnerable when they stop eating—even for a short time. Overweight cats are at even greater risk, and hepatic lipidosis can quickly turn into life-threatening liver failure. L-carnitine may help reduce that risk.
